Autograph letter signed, 1897, Feb. 2.

Letter addressed to a colleague, George Hempl, professor of German philology at Stanford University, gives a detailed history of the pronunciation, spelling and origin of Vietor's name. He traces his name back to the province of Hesse, Germany in the 16th century and finds the word vietor used by the Roman playwright, Plautus. He traces the use of various diacritics over the letter "e."
